WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A HANG TIME ON A REPEATER? During the hang time is when the next station to transmit should begin his or her transmission. The purpose of the hang time is to prevent the repeater transmitter from unkeying and rekeying repeatedly during the course of a conversation. It is less stress on repeater and equipment also cools better. When picket fencing or packet loss into the repeater it does not chatter the transmiiter. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A COURTESY TONE ON A REPEATER? We hear the courtesy tone almost every time we use the repeater. It's that innocuous beep that lets us know that the repeater is alive and, most importantly, that it has heard us. The courtesy tone also separates one person's comments from the comments of the next person. Courtesy tones also let you know that the repeater timer is reset. It also eliminates squelch tail crash. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A CW ID ON A REPEATER? The repeater needs to ID every 10 Minutes when there is a transmission on the repeater. So when the repeater ID'S you should ID also it just keeps it legal. You don't have to say for Idenfication purposes we know what it is for. WHAT IS COORDINATED REPEATER? Basically, it is a form of voluntary participation in an organized program intended to keep interference between repeaters and their users to a minimum. WHAT IS CONTINUOUS TONE-CODED SQUELCH SYSTEM? In telecommunications, Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System or CTCSS is one type of in-band signaling that is used to reduce the annoyance of listening to other users on a shared two-way radio communications channel. It is sometimes referred to as tone squelch. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF BREAK ON A REPEATER? To make a distress call over a repeater, say "break break" and then your call sign to alert all stations to stand by while you deal with the emergency. Never use break to get into a conversation use your call sign. like my call sign KE6GVK I would say GVK. Or your full call sign. Also don't say break to reset the repeater. Just say reset. keep it simple. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A TIMEOUT TIMER ON A REPEATER? The repeater have timeout circuits that automatically shut the transmitters down in the event there is a steady carrier on the input frequency for longer than 3 minutes. To reset the timer, it is only necessary to release your microphone button for an instant or Say reset. You don't have to let the repeater transmitter drop. WHY DO REPEATERS HAVE OFFSET? This is necessary for simultaneous retransmission – a repeater cannot simultaneous retransmit on the same frequency on which it is also receiving, as this would create a vicious feedback situation. The difference between the repeater's receive frequency and its transmit frequency is called the offset. HOW D YOU TEST ON A REPEATER? Once you get your repeater's frequencies programmed into your radio properly and you've double checked the settings for sending tones, you can try “breaking the squelch.” Press the transmit button on your radio give your call sign and say testing. You should hear something when you do this. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A DUPPLEXER OR CAVITYS ON A REPEATER? A duplexer is a device that allows bi-directional communication over a single channel. In radio communications systems, it isolates the receiver from the transmitter while permitting them to share a common antenna. Most repeaters have a duplexer. MORE TO COME 2025 |
